100 Things Apollo 11 Left on the Moon
There is an effort afoot to get the Apollo 11 lunar landing site classified as a historic site and preserved so we won’t lose it to condominium developers and 7-11’s.
I think this is a great idea, but it’s not something we’re going to have to worry about anytime soon, even with NASA’s desire to return to the moon, I don’t see any threat to that stuff for quite a while. Going to the moon will cost a fortune and we have the ISS to pay for after all.
When reading about the effort to make a historic site out of our first moon landing, I came across this really neat list of things the Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong left behind. Among the 100 items in the list (full list here):
- Neil Armstrong’s space suit, Model A7L (1). I love that there’s a model number.
- Buzz Aldrin’s space boots (2). He must’ve had really big feet.
- 3′x5′ U.S. Flag (1).
- A Gold Replica of an Olive Branch, Traditional Symbol of Peace (1)
- Mission Patch from Apollo I of Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White 11, and Roger B. Chaffee. (1)
- Defecation Collection Device (4). Well, you gotta go when you gotta go
- Medals Commemorating Two Dead Cosmonauts (2)
- Footprints
That last one is reason enough for me to want to do it.
