As many are no doubt aware, we will be treated to a total lunar eclipse this Friday. In the United States, it will already be in progress when the moon rises:
The entire event will be visible from Europe, Africa and western Asia. In eastern Asia, moonset occurs during various stages of the eclipse. For […]

I just found this site and have been messing around with it today: skymap.org. It’s an interactive sky map ala Google Maps which allows you to browse the night sky in a pretty trivial manner. It also has a SDSS mode for showing images taken with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
Here’s a […]

I almost gave up on a career in physics and astronomy. Several times. I had significant math blocks and I seemed to constantly struggle with higher concepts in physics.
All my life, and more than anything in the world, I wanted to be an astronomer, nothing else mattered to me, yet I didn’t seem […]

The north and south poles of the Sun are not at the same temperature, they vary by roughly 7 to 8 percent, or 80,000 degrees Kelvin.
The astute reader (which is of course you, since you’re reading my blog) may be asking, “Wait a minute, did you say 80,000 degrees? I thought the Sun was […]

Maybe I’m just in a mood, but I get a little irritated every time I hear someone talk about the anthropic principle.
The basic idea is that for intelligent life to be in the universe AT ALL, the physical laws of the universe must be consistent for allowing that life.

Furthermore, it’s at opposition which means the views will not be this good for a few years. […]

“It” was a loud bang, something loud enough to be heard all over the county, and loud enough to make small objects move in houses.
Reports […]

I was just thinking as I am sitting here freezing my buttocks off here in Colorado: “What’s Mars like this time of year?”
Thanks to YouTube I have an answer:
You really need to watch this several times to catch everything. Funny, funny stuff!

You’ve had a hard week haven’t you Lisa? For some reason the plan you had devised didn’t work and now people you’ve never met from all over the world are saying things about you. Things that make me cringe. I have no idea what you were up to, but the thing is, […]

I’ve been a good boy all week. I’ve kept my skewed perspective all to myself and not imposed it on anyone since I was being mr-serious-astronomer-guy spewing forth astronomical information for the nobly named Just Science Week.
The thing is, I didn’t want to distract you. I wanted you to learn this stuff, […]
