Best Lunar Eclipse I’ve Seen in a Long Time

This’ll be the last total lunar eclipse till 2010Photo Credit:  atomicshark
The skies were clear, the air was crisp and cold, my breath formed heavy clouds of condensation that floated skyward as I watched the best lunar eclipse to come around in a while.
I hope you all got a chance to check it out where you […]

Lindsey Lohan in the (Astronomy)Buff

The b5 servers are crawling today, so my apologies to those trying to get to my stuff.
Apparently, Lindsey Lohan took her clothes off and that has caused the b5media servers to get slammed (umm, with traffic that is).
I’m not quite sure how that affects me except I got an email alluding to that event as […]

Best Info on Tonight’s Lunar Eclipse

It’s actually clear here in Champaign!  I can see a blue sky and I think it might stay that way, so I’ll be going out tonight to see the eclipse.
Totality is going to last about 50 minutes and most people in the U.S. without clouds hanging over their heads will be able to see it.
I’m […]

Lunar Eclipse Trivia

To get you all in the spirit of this week’s total lunar eclipse, I’ve devised a little trivial test (mispelling intentional).
Good luck everyone and thanks for playing…
Lunar Eclipses always occur:

During the day
At night
During Hollywood writer’s strikes
At the same time as American Idol

The Moon is ALWAYS in what phase during a lunar eclipse:

Crescent
Half
Liquid
Full
Solid
Gas

Lunar Eclipses […]

Thank God It’s Not Just Me

Working on about three different projects myself (all within the Dark Energy Survey, but still…), it was nice to read that I’m not the only one.
You know a blog is good when you read things like this:
That’s very kind of you, Adam. But, realistically, what I have to say would be as substantial as a […]

Why I Don’t Blog About “What’s Up Tonight?”

[Very busy today cleaning up the dark energy someone spilled in the colloquium room earlier today (I hate being the new guy), so I don’t have time for much of a post.  I’ve been meaning to get the word out about this cool site maintained by one of my colleagues and today’s a good day […]

HST Finds One of the Most Distant Galaxies Ever Seen

Here’s what a galaxy whose light has been travelling 13 billion years looks like (it’s in the white square, click on the image to see a bigger one):

What’s really cool about this image is that the light from this distant galaxy was made over 10 […]

Gravity Waves: mp3 Files of the Universe

Things that produce gravity waves.Image Credit:  NASA
Well, this is an interesting way to look at gravity waves.
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has been looking for gravity waves for the past two years and scientists are beginning to pour over the data.
What they are looking for are gravity waves which manifest themselves when massive objects […]

Backyard Hubble Space Telescope

I was trolling around Flickr today for interesting astronomy pictures and found the one below.  Wow.
This is the kind of image excellent equipment gives you (OK, and lots of experience):

Taken with a Takahashi refractor and an SBIG Camera, this image rivals anything I’ve seen come out of NASA.
Excellent work.
Apparently, there is a slight […]
