AstroShorts.com takes requests and gives away IPOD’s

by Tony on May 21st, 2007

One reader posted a comment wondering about the possibility of requests for astronomy videos, particularly those that have been webcast but not necessarily served anywhere for viewing on demand.

Steve from AstroShorts.com responds:

In regards to the comment below, please note that there is a place on our main page for people to contact us with their requests. Of course, we’re limited by the permissions from outside sources for certain video but we’re working on it. We will try to obtain what our viewers want to see.

These guys are working pretty hard at making sure they do a quality job serving videos, I’ve been very impressed with them. Steve recently emailed me to tell me about recent upgrades:

Hello Tony,

We are upgrading already!

More features and a better presentation for Astroshorts. Also, we want to avoid any issues regarding slow loading etc so we will be going to a totally dedicated server.

Ultimately, AstroShorts will be successful if viewers add their own content. This is an open community and we invite people submit their own video on any astronomy related subject. By the way, we are trying to stimulate submissions with our IPOD contest running throughout May. Right now, anyone who submits video related to attracting new people to astronomy will be entered into the IPOD contest. Viewers are invited to vote on any video submitted through the month of MayWe really want people to understand that anyone can participate. Your video does not have to be “broadcast quality”. We want you to share it with the rest of us so don’t be shy! There are plenty of great ideas -here’s an outlet to present them.

So, there you go. That’s about as responsive as you can get. I have a real good feeling about these guys and what they’re doing. I’m rushing my video so I can enter the contest. My iPod’s one of those original 10GB jobs where the battery lasts about 30 minutes.

Oh sure, I could just go out and by one, but what fun is that? I’d rather win one and recoup something for all the time I spend editing.

Tony - thanks for publishing that excellent response. I’ve fired off a request to them so we shall see whether anyone caught the webcast I’m interested in.

Astroshorts definitely seem to be going about things the right way at the moment and I look forward to seeing the competition entries - good luck with yours!

    Nick
