Best Info on Tonight’s Lunar Eclipse

by Tony on February 20th, 2008

It’s actually clear here in Champaign!  I can see a blue sky and I think it might stay that way, so I’ll be going out tonight to see the eclipse.

Totality is going to last about 50 minutes and most people in the U.S. without clouds hanging over their heads will be able to see it.

I’m not going to regurgitate all the basic info because it’s already been done by others.  Check out the following sites for specifics in your area:

NASA’s Lunar Eclipse page for February 20’s Eclipse
Sky and Telescope’s page on tonight’s eclipse

Bottom line, go outside at about the time you were planning on watching TV, around the time of the late night local news and you’ll see something really cool.

For full enjoyment of the event please consider my recommendations - the first one would require long travel for most, but the other two can be tried even from a city.

The eclipse was spectacular tonight. I also saw Saturn through my telescope.

Hey Tony, when do we expect the next solar eclipse, or one that we in the eastern US could see?

Next US Lunar eclipse is in 2 or 3 yrs - so don’t hold your breath =-)

We had about %30 clouds here in Central Carolina for the first half, then nothing but sucker holes for the second half. I’ll offload the pix from the camera tonight and see what I got!

Just my luck. Thick cloud cover all night long. Me and the wife sat in our front yard looking at an extremely hazy glow in the sky through our binoculars. At least we bonded. :-D

    Reader from Florida here.

The night was nice and comfortable, but a bit cloudy, which had us worried. None-the-less, we got out the trusty cheapo telescope my wife got as a xmas present a few years ago and hoped for the best.

Lucky for us, only a few whispy clouds passed in front of the moon, and only for a minute or so at a time, so we didn’t miss much.

That is, until the eclipse had peaked, and the entire moon was darkened (orange/red). At the moment the entire moon was covered by Earth’s shadow, as if viewing a play in a fancy theatre, thick clouds rolled across the moon, the closing curtains on a wonderful performance.

For the rest of the evening the moon remained hidden behind thick clouds, but Boy, what a show!
