Geminid Meteor Shower 2007
The Geminid meteor shower is coming up in a little over a week.
On December 13th at around 10pm or so, start looking towards the constellation Gemini to see what promises to be the best meteor shower of the year.
Here’s where to look (click on it to see a bigger one):

Geminids will start around 10:30pm December 13th
Here’s more info in it from NASA.

Are Geminids usually bright?
I caught the Orionids and they were clearly a dimmer group. The reason I ask is that I live in New York City but have a country house on Eastern Long Island were the sky is reasonably dark. Is this shower worth the trip Thursday night and then drag myself back into New York in the AM for work?
Thanks

All I can say is that 2 years ago the Gemind shower was absolutely the best I’ve ever seen in my entire life. That said, I haven’t seen very many, but between 11 and 1 in the morning they were falling at an unbeliveable rate. I was parked in the desert under clear skies wrapped in a sleeping bag with a nice bottle of wine and a friend. Yes, we actually watched the falling stars.

I plan on heading out to the Anza-Borrego desert on Friday night (the 14th). I now realize that the peak is going to be on Thursday night/Friday morning. I can’t go out then due to having to work on Friday. Can I still expect a good show on Friday night/Saturday morning?

KevinFromSanteeCA: I don’t think you’ll see all that many on the Friday night/Sat morning session, but you will see some. The meteor rate really drops past the peak. The way things are in Illinois right now, I won’t see anything but the underbelly of clouds.
Tom: Man, do you have the right idea!

well, i live in san jose california, and I was sitting outside, oh yeah, time: 10:45pm, and i looked up towards the southern sky and a huge lime green very bright “thing” shot through the sky for about 2 seconds, then faded into oblivion. I swore it landed in the neighbors yard!!! No, probably not but it really blew my socks off. It was beautiful. Well, dont know if this will help, but thought it might be interesting!!!! =)
