More NASA Hijinx: They’re Throwing Laptops Out of the ISS
I guess this explains the cost of the International Space Station.
The Government Accounting Office (GAO) released this report saying that over the last 10 years, 94 million dollars in equipment has been lost. On the first page of the report is this little gem:
“This computer, although assigned to me, was being used on board the International Space Station. I was informed that it was tossed overboard to be burned up in the atmosphere when it failed.”
Of course, that’s one example cited in the report and the one we’ll read the most on blogs everywhere, but here’s why the GAO did the study:
For years, GAO and others have reported that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) does not maintain effective control over the $35 billion of property, plant, and equipment and materials that it reports on its financial statement.
The GAO had 10 recommendations, 8 of which read identically (to me anyway). Bottom line? The GAO recommends that NASA “strengthen and enforce NASA policy on user accountability for equipment loss.”
In other words, stop throwing the laptops out into space guys.
Hoo boy. Maybe the Kepler guys weren’t the crazy ones after all?
Here’s another post from New Scientist Space Blog about it as well.
