My Blogging Schedule

by Tony on May 19th, 2007

PragueastronomicalclockI was going to start this post with, “Astute readers of this blog…”, but then I realized that was unnecessary because ALL of my readers are astute, so it was a bit redundant.

So, let’s try this:

Readers of this blog may have noticed some oddities in my posting frequency (yes, that’s better), particularly, around the middle of the month. It seems there is usually a dry spell in the middle of the month (about a week or so) where there are few or no posts.

Since December, when I started this blog, there have been gaps in posting on February, March, April, and now May.

February and March I had travel during those periods, and as much as I intend to post on the road, I almost never do. I get too distracted by wherever I am, whatever I’m doing or whoever I’m with, and before I know it, I’m back home and no posts have been written.

In April, well… That one’s easy: taxes. I had a really complicated tax situation this year and I spent an entire week on that crap.

Now it’s May. Travel again followed by a workshop. I worked from a different location for about eight days and was doing good just to make sure I kept up with my regular workload, so posting was minimal to non-existent during that time as well.

I have the best intentions though. Whenever I know I’m about to travel or be otherwise taken from my normal posting routine, I intend to write a few posts before I leave. That never happens. I’m usually busy getting other crap out of the way or preparing for whatever is required for the trip.

I’m telling you this because I wanted you to know why the middle of the month is always dry around here and to tell you that I’m taking steps to avoid future blogging gaps. I love you guys and I want to keep you, and it’s only fair that inform you on all things relating to this blog.

This is for you, after all. I already know most of what’s in my head.

One thing you can count on though, and that is I will post a minimum of 24 posts per month (that’s what I agreed to when I signed up) but that doesn’t say much about the distribution of posts. Lately, it seems that I’ve been doing about one per day till the interruption hits, followed by two or more per day to catch up and make the monthly minimum.

I don’t particularly like being held to a certain number of posts per month, but I understand the need. I just need to make sure they are quality posts that are relatively interesting and unique. Luckily, I seem to never run out of ideas, so at least I’m covered there for a while.

Anyway, thanks for the patience during this time and rest assured that I think this’ll be the last time. I’m back now and needing to catch up, I’m also considering the idea of asking for guest bloggers to fill in any gaps. Summer is coming and I have lots of travel plans and guest blogging is a great way to get the word out and advertise your blog.

If you’re interested, please let me know. I may even consider paying a small stipend for particularly well-written ones.

An interesting side note: One thing I’ve noticed since starting this blog is that the posts that generate the most interest, get linked to the most from other blogs, and generate the most comments on my site, are NOT the informative “This is what’s happening in astronomy” stuff, nor is the educational “What is dark matter?” posts. Rather its the skewed perspective ones. my really strange posts that show you my true self, what goes on in my head, how and what I think and the opinions that come from it.

i usually pause and make a face before hitting the ‘Publish’ button on those because I’m sure it’s gonna piss someone off or offend someone. The exact opposite usually happens, people flood me with emails and positive comments.

That tells me you guys are essentially as strange as I am. Welcome aboard and grab a glass of wine. The meeting of the High Sigma Club is about to come to order.

High sigma indeed. Who can tell me what that’s a reference to? And Julie’s not allowed to answer.

As for the clock, it is very, very cool. It’s in Prague and I want one on my living room. I’ll move over my ‘My Little Pony‘ figurines to make room for it.

Oh wait, I wasn’t supposed to tell you about those. Did I just say that out loud?
