My Hubble Video Was Featured on OfTheWorld.tv

There are some things we do in life that take us completely off guard. We do them - not necessarily thinking much about it at the time - and sometimes find out that the impact of those things is greater than we could have imagined.

In September 2006, I made this video during a slow weekend, and posted it to YouTube for fun. I thought it would be cool if perhaps 1,000 people saw it. So far, over 700,000 people have, more than I ever imagined.

The video also made it to the front page of Digg. Twice. (Sadly, it was the version posted on YouTube, not the one on DeepAstronomy, so I didn’t benefit much from the traffic)

In the weeks following my initial posting, I started getting emails and comments from people all over the world. Most thanked me for making it in the first place, but there were some curious reactions as well.

For example, many people felt the need to get religious and used the video as ‘proof’ of a creator. I’m not sure how a six minute video can prove anything as big as that, yet people found it to be enough.

By and large though, the reactions were overwhelmingly positive. I’ve gotten emails from people that have actually brought tears to my eyes.

It isn’t an exaggeration to say that my life has changed significantly from this video. I’ve interacted with, and even met, people whom I never would have otherwise.

And some of them changed my life.

I can’t really tell you how any of this happened, I didn’t do anything special to get it out there, it was just one of those viral things I guess.

Early on, one of the first people to contact me was from OfTheWorld.tv, they wanted a high-res version for a website they were doing (billed as a new television network for Web 2.0):

OfTheWorld.tv was formed out of the passion of many people from around the world for independent media and the discourse of truth and fact.

The site is extremely cool, I spent an hour there before I knew what was happening. I just sat there entranced watching all kinds of good stuff.

They just emailed me to say my humble video is featured. Please check it out and support what they are doing. I can’t escape the idea that they are onto something here. They have lots of other videos to watch, but I have my favorite…
