New Site: AstronomyBuzz
The Bad Astronomer has just launched a really cool new community website called AstronomyBuzz. Designed as a new community for astronomy enthusiasts, it offers members a way to publish, share and embed content related to astronomy.
My first impression was that it looked like a Digg for astronomy, and that can only be a good thing. Of course, as with any site like this, success depends on participation and I’m not sure there’s THAT many people out there digging for and creating new content in astronomy other than the already big players, at least enough to justify an entire site to it. I hope what doesn’t end up happening is seeing the same content from the same sources (NASA, Space.com, BABlog, etc) over and over.
I do like the idea of an astronomy community on the web, I’ve been approached several times to try and start one, sadly, I just don’t have the time. I have thought about doing exactly the same thing as Phil, now I don’t have to. I can just watch and participate. I just got my account set up and will see what I can do. I’ll let you know and hope to see you over there.
I am planning to make some more astronomy videos when time permits and I will try to post them there. I noticed that the Deep Field Video I made was already posted by someone, I was flattered to see that. Although when I clicked on the link, I didn’t see the video embedded in that particular entry.
So let’s go over and start participating, shall we?
Anyway, off to buzz some astronomy…

I’m launching one in a couple of days. What’s good about the site is that if you’re a webmaster it’s interesting to go and post your news there. What’s bad is that it relies way too much on javascript, and its really really really slow on loading. I hope my community will gain as much attraction, but Phil benefits from his “fame” in internet astronomy and can get a lot of traffic from his site to astronomybuzz. Anyway, my version’s going in private beta in a couple of days, so if you’re interested, just send me an email (astronomy-page.com/contact).
