Sky-Map.org is Now WikiSky.org (or was it always that way?)
I just read this from NewScientist.com about a new site called wikisky.org and I excitedly clicked on the link to get me there.
The site looked awfully familiar to me, it looked just like sky-map.org. Apparently, they are the same site, just different domain. Perhaps this was always set up this way and I didn’t know it.
My favorite things about these sites is the API (Application Programming Interface) that they offer. It is really easy to integrate a lot of their functionality into your own site. They’ve taken the ’simpler is better’ approach and make their products available through simple html forms or iframe elements.
The API is trivial to use. It allows people to integrate these star maps onto their sites by just copying and pasting some HTML. Below, I’ve copied their example straight into this blog.

The coordiantes of the center of this image are: Right ascension = 00h 42m 32s Declination = 41° 19′ 53″ This image is generated automatically by sky-map.org server. Ellipses on the image show the approximate positions of galaxies. Big ellipse in the center of the image shows the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). |
