Solar Plasma Following Magnetic Field Lines
Some very good friends of mine have been working on the Solar-B mission and I’ve been quite impressed with the images coming out. I haven’t seen a lot of bloggers posting images from this spacecraft, so I thought I’d provide one.
Below is an image of the solar chromosphere, a region just above what is normally thought of as the solar ’surface’ and below the corona (or solar atmosphere). The magnetic field lines are traced by flowing plasma. This plasma consists of charged particles that flow along the field lines.
The optical package on board Solar-B is capable of producing images with 0.2 arcsecond resolution, providing excellent detail of magnetic field structures like what’s shown below.
