Some of Us Are More Different Than Most of Us

Oooh, a graph! There’s nothing like a graph to get your science juices flowing.

Most people enjoy being in the middle of the bell curve. Indeed, they expend an enormous amount of energy to make sure they are as smack-dab in the middle as they can get.

If they start to see themselves stand out, many will instantly retreat back to the safety of the hump (of the bell curve, that is).

But how many hump-people make a difference?

Oh sure, it can be argued that ordinary people do extraordinary things everyday, like raise kids, love each other, blah, blah, blah… But that’s just stuff human beings do by design. It’s in our nature to do most of that stuff.

People make ordinary things sound heroic so they can feel better about not taking chances out in the fringes of the distribution.

Of course, the distribution has two sides, a creepy one and a positive, original one. I’m not advocating becoming a psychopath, so don’t go out posting craigslist ads and stalk people. No, I’m trying to encourage you to look towards the edge a bit, the positive edge.

Do something that makes you a little uncomfortable, something you wouldn’t ordinarily do. You’d be surprised at how little changes make a big difference in your thinking.

Changing your routine, putting yourself in situations you’ve never been in before, make it inevitable that you will have thoughts you’ve never had before. Your brain begins firing synapses that have long been dormant or under-utilized. Having these new experiences and firing those rusty synapses can cascade to new thoughts which will build up an entirely new network of neurons in your brain.

This new network can connect to other, pre-existing neural networks in your brain which combined can form a truly original set of ideas, ideas that NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER HAD BEFORE.

And these original, unique ideas can be expressed only by you and in so doing, you’ve just made the world a slightly better place.

All because you dared to look toward the edge of the distribution.
