String Theory: We’re Ahead of Ourselves

by Tony on September 28th, 2007

From Facing Up: Science and Its Cultural Adversaries by Steven Weinberg (aff. link):

Edward Witten has said that the reason we are having so much trouble doing superstring physics is that it is twenty-first century physics, which we accidentally discovered thirty years too early.

Oh. I though the reason we couldn’t do superstring physics was that it involved 500 dimensions and a Super Friends secret decoder ring.

Read the above book, it’s written by the same guy who wrote The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe (aff link), and oh yeah, he won a Nobel Prize.

It is a collection of essays that deal with everything from the boundaries of scientific knowledge, designer universes, what happened before the Big Bang, and many more very interesting ideas. His writing style is very easy on people without a science background and he is very good at presenting his thoughts.

I promise you this book will make you think.
