Astronomy Buff

The one post you’ll probably never see

by Tony on December 28th, 2006

One of my favorite things to do when I discover a new blog is to read the very first post. Sometimes, it takes quite a bit of effort to find it. I mean, usually you have to select the earliest month listed in the archives, then keep hitting ‘Earlier Posts’ until you finally get there.

You can find some interesting stuff in the first post of a blog. Sometimes, the blogger’s hopes and dreams are listed there as well as what they hope to get out of blogging. Othertimes, it’s a rather narcissitic post that announces: “Hey I’m blogging now, beat down my door to read my stuff.” But mostly, it’s the ‘Hello World’ default WordPress post.

If you’re reading this, then you’re either from b5Media and you know I’m here (Hi guys!), or an amazing and unlikely set of coincidences caused you to stumble onto me. And now that you’re here, I have a surprise for you. I’m going to post information about myself here that isn’t commonly known about me. I’m going to store it here, because only a small percentage of my future readers are going to hit the ‘Previous Posts’ link to get here. If you did do that to get here, then this is the treasure at the end of the hunt.

I probably won’t mention this stuff again on this blog.
Things about Tony that a lot of people don’t know:

  • I am a pilot. I fly small Cessna aircraft and gliders for fun.
  • I never do anything the way most people do them.
  • When I am interested in something, I become obsessed with it until I’ve mastered it. This is especially true for learning new skills. I played the Irish whistle 8 hours everyday for six months before I became satisfied that I could do it well enough to do something else.
  • I have very few friends. The ones I do have, I cherish with all my heart and would give them a lung if they asked for it.
  • People either really like me or they hate me. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. Of course, the ambivalent ones wouldn’t voice their opinion, would they?
  • I want to live in Ireland. I love Irish music
  • My family went through a hellish divorce when I was 13. It became a defining moment in the man I would become.
  • I am extremely introverted. I mention that here because you wouldn’t know that by reading this blog, my website or watching my videos.
  • I love to think outside the box. If I find myself doing something that everyone else is doing (blogging notwithstanding of course), I feel compelled to stop it. I can’t always do it, but there is a strong urge to be a contrarian.
  • I’ve seen Riverdance three times.

So there you go. This is where I’m going to keep stuff about me that isn’t commonly known. To get here, you’ll have to work for it, because I’m about to post a lot of content and this’ll get buried fast.

gosh, I read your whole post. I am part of b5media and blog for them. I and my husband like to set up a telescope in our backyard and view the stars. We like to look at the moons of Saturn. Lately, we are looking at reflected sunspots of the sun.

It’s nice to see an astronomy blog flourishing.

    I’ll be reading.

I’ve been an amateur astronomer on and off since high school. It was a school activity I enjoyed because I could stay up late, or early, when comets came by.

    See you around!

    Good luck with the blog!
